FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

California Pacific University complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA gives students certain rights with respect to their educational records.

Student Rights Under FERPA

Right to Inspect Records

Students have the right to inspect and review their education records within 45 days of submitting a written request to the Registrar's Office. The request should identify the specific records the student wishes to inspect.

Students may request the amendment of education records they believe are inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of their privacy rights. The request must be in writing, clearly identify the part of the record to be changed, and specify why it should be changed.

Students have the right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in their education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent (e.g., to school officials with legitimate educational interest).

Students have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by CPU to comply with the requirements of FERPA. Complaints may be filed with the Family Policy Compliance Office in Washington, D.C.

Directory Information

CPU designates the following as directory information: student name, address, telephone number, email address, date and place of birth, major field of study, enrollment status, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, and most recent previous institution attended. Students may request that directory information not be released by submitting a written request to the Registrar’s Office.
